Farewell Brevard County Swimming

The Smoker Has Left The Pool

Hello and ... Goodbye swim fans. First let me apologize for my lack of posts this summer. Unfortunately, life off the pool deck has got in the way. Just like in the pool when opportunities come your way you have to take advantage of them. I have a new job outside the state. There just isn't the time or the means to keep up the blog anymore. So, no more Outside Smoker, for this I am sorry.

Secondly, let me say, it's been a blast doing this blog the last two years. Through the comments and emails of support and even the ones not so supportive I've enjoyed it all. I wish all the swimmers, coaches, and parents involved in Brevard County swimming and diving good luck and calm water.

Lucas Kravchenko, from Central Brevard Swimming, competed in the annual FL Swimming Vs. FL Gold Coast All-Stars Short Course Dual Meet, April 6 & 7 at Indian River State College. Kravchenko contributed in a big way to the FL Swimming victory over their south Florida counter parts taking first place in the 11-12 Boys 50 Yard Freestyle, 100 Yard Freestyle, 200 Yard Freestyle, 50 Yard Backstroke, 100 Yard Backstroke, and 100 Yard IM events. - John Hughes NJCAA Hall Of Fame Bid Status?

Last year there was an anonymous post that requested some assistance with an effort to get long time area swim coach John Hughes inducted into the NCJAA Hall of Fame. I passed along the information, but never heard anything else. I recently received an email from a former BCC swimmer offering to assist. It also sparked my curiosity, so if anyone has any information or is still looking for assistance please email the Smoker at outside.smoker@gmail.com.

- Debunking Myths About Scholarships

I saw a good article on the Collegeswimming.com website regarding swimming and diving scholarships. Collegeswimming.com is a good source for all things happening in swimming at the college level. I thought I would share the link for those interested in pursuing swimming or diving in college.

Tentative 2013-2015 FHSAA Swimming & Diving State Series Assignments

The FHSAA announced today the tentative Swimming & Diving State Series Assignments for the 2013-2014 & 2014-2015 school years. The FHSAA had already announced there would be an additional classification starting next school year for swimming and diving. There is also some discussion concerning changing start dates for FHSAA sports. Additional details to be announced the last week of April. The new changes mean some positive opportunities for Brevard county high school swimming and diving.

Although there are no schools in the new 4A classification, there are some changes that should create some great local competition. In the 3A class Viera High School will be joined by Heritage High School and Melbourne High School in Region 2, District 5.

Class 2A brings an all Brevard county district into play with Astronaut High, Rockledge High, Satellite High, and Space Coast High moving up from Class 1A joining Bayside High School, Eau Gallie High School, Merritt Island High School, Palm Bay High School and Titusville High School. This creates the largest local district with 9 members in Region 2, District 5.

Finally, the Class 1A realignment groups Cocoa Beach Jr/Sr High School with the counties private and choice schools; Edgewood Jr/Sr High School, Florida Air Academy, Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy, Melbourne Central Catholic High School, and West Shore Jr/Sr High School in Region 2, District 5.

UPDATE: Training for New USA Swimming Officials

Great Opportunity For Brevard County Swimming

Here's a great opportunity for area coaches, parents, or anyone interested in learning to become a USA Swimming Official. Brevard Swim Club is hosting a clinic for all of those interested. Please see below for details.

PLEASE NOTE DATE CHANGE

From Mrs. Jill Rochelle, Brevard Swim Club:

Good Afternoon Coaches!

We will be hosting a clinic for those interested in learning to become a USA Swimming Official on Monday, March 4, 2013 at the FIT pool from 5:30-7:30pm. As for now, we will meet at the FIT pool and move to the shelter by the cafeteria for the clinic. If this changes, I will let you know.

Directions:
Babcock South to University Blvd
make right into FIT campus
make first left into parking lot (park here or near by)
Pool is on left between gym and cafeteria

Come inside the gate and look for me, Jill Rochelle

Anyone that is interested in being a USA certified official is welcome to join us. We thought this would be a great opportunity to get more officials not only from our club, but from Brevard county.

There is no fee for this clinic and drinks & a snack will be provided.

I've included some some information from Judi Wojcik, the official that will be doing the training, that you can pass to those that may be interested. Her contact information is also included if they have further questions.

I do ask to please let me know if you plan to attend. Either coaches can give me a number of participants from their club or the individuals can let me know by sending me an email to admin@brevardswimclub.com. This way I have a good number for refreshments and if we have to move location to provide enough room.

Also, if you have members in the community that are not officially part of your club, but you know they would like to be an official, please forward this information to them as well.

I realize this is short notice, but I just got the actual date this afternoon.

If you or parents have any questions, please let me know. Also, if I've missed anyone on this email, please let me know and also forward the information to them.

Hope you all have a great evening!

Additional Information from Judi Wojcik, Official providing the training:

To prepare, they may want to:
- download the ST Clinic packet from the FL Swimming website officials page called "Officials Forms" and look through it. http://www.floridaswimming.org/SubTabGeneric.jsp?team=szfllsc&_stabid_=74305
- Open a free online account at USASwimming.org and generate a S&T/Timers Test.
www.usaswimming.org/ see Instructions to Sign In to take the Officials tests

It will be extremely helpful to them to print out both their test and the clinic packet and bring it with them.
The clinic packet will also tell them how to open a free USA Swimming account without being a member yet. They can add my name as the CLINIC INSTRUCTOR so USA Swimming will know to look for that fulfilled requirement from me and attach that info to their account when I submit it as completed.
(Membership, Background check, and APT certification will come after they start apprenticing on deck)

Questions:

1) What about the other officials besides ST? If we had someone interested in being the starting official? Does everyone have to do the ST before moving on to other officials

They need to be a certified ST official for at least one year and usually have the recommendation of an area rep in order to move to Starter- the core of officiating is at ST and the ability to master that skill set. To do that, they will need to spend some time on deck working as a ST official. Even many of the senior officials go back and spend time as ST because those skills are primary to everything else.

2) Should they go ahead and take the test or just sign in and print it out?

They can start taking the test if they would like - they will need the current 2012 rule book to take the current tests which is available free in pdf form online. The 2013 rule book is not used until May 2013.
Matter of fact, if they complete the Certification S&T/timers test before they take the clinic, they are able to start apprenticing on deck immediately after the clinic. (USA Membership, APT, and BG are not necessary to start apprenticing but will need to be done prior to certification approval by their FL Board area rep)

3) Is it okay if they went ahead and did the USA membership, background check and APT certification? I have a few that may have already done it.

Absolutely! They will need to make sure they did a Level 2 background check though and take the APT as a non-athlete member/ official, not the customized APT for parents. The membership (which is basically insurance) will have to be processed by USA Swimming before that can happen.

Anyone can email or call/text me too with any questions or clarifications.
Hope that helps!
